About Xfinity Center: Layout, History & Architecture
Opened in 1986 as the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts, the Xfinity Center is a large-scale outdoor amphitheater situated in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Designed primarily for concerts and live performances, the venue accommodates approximately 19,900 patrons. Its configuration features a covered main pavilion with fixed seating for around 7,000 attendees, offering protection from the elements and a direct sightline to the stage. Behind this pavilion, a large, sloped general admission lawn area extends, capable of holding an additional 12,900 spectators.
The architectural approach prioritizes functional capacity over ornate design, presenting a robust, open-air structure. Sightlines from the pavilion seating are generally unobstructed, though those in the rear rows will experience a considerable distance from the stage. On the expansive lawn, viewing angles are dependent on individual positioning on the natural incline, with large video screens typically deployed to enhance visibility for those further back. As an outdoor facility, the acoustic profile of the space is heavily influenced by the specific sound engineering of each touring production. While the pavilion's roof provides some sound direction, the open nature of the hall means sound dispersion is significant, particularly across the lawn area, where environmental factors and crowd noise can also impact clarity.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Ingress to the Xfinity Center typically involves multiple entry points leading into an expansive concourse that wraps around the main pavilion. Security checks are standard, and attendees should anticipate bag searches. Within the concourse and extending to the periphery of the lawn, numerous concession stands and bars provide a range of refreshments. The crowd atmosphere varies distinctly between sections: the pavilion offers a more structured, seated concert experience, while the lawn cultivates a relaxed, often festival-like environment where patrons can spread out (subject to specific event rules regarding blankets and chairs). The standing pit directly in front of the stage can become densely packed, offering intimate proximity to performers but also intense crowding. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
How do I get to Xfinity Center, Mansfield?
Xfinity Center is at South Main Street, Mansfield, 02048. Open in Google Maps
By train and tube
The nearest mainline station is Mansfield Station, served by the MBTA Commuter Rail Providence/Stoughton Line. Located on Depot Street in downtown Mansfield, the station is approximately 3.5 miles north-northeast of the Xfinity Center. This distance makes walking unfeasible. Patrons arriving by rail must arrange for ride-share services, taxis, or pre-booked shuttles for the approximate 10-15 minute drive south down South Main Street (Route 140) to the venue.
By bus
Regular public bus routes from the Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority (GATRA) do not provide direct service to the Xfinity Center on event days. Public transit options are extremely limited, and most attendees rely on private transport. Special event-specific shuttles may occasionally be offered by promoters or third-party operators; it is advisable to check individual event listings for any such arrangements.
By car and parking
The Xfinity Center provides extensive on-site parking lots, accessible directly from South Main Street (Route 140). Parking fees are typically charged per vehicle and are often substantial. Advance purchase of parking through ticket vendors is recommended, as it can expedite entry to the lots and may secure a reduced rate. Patrons should anticipate significant traffic congestion on South Main Street and within the parking areas before and after events, particularly for sold-out shows. Early arrival is strongly advised.
Entry and security
The primary entrance for all patrons is situated off South Main Street, which leads into the main parking facilities before directing towards various gates around the venue perimeter. Queue arrangements can differ based on event size and specific security protocols. Standard bag search policies are enforced, and clear bag policies are frequently mandated; patrons should verify permitted items for their specific event. Arriving 60-90 minutes prior to the scheduled start time is recommended to allow adequate time for parking, security screening, and locating one's seating or desired spot on the lawn.
