About Westgate Hall: Layout, History & Architecture

Westgate Hall, originally constructed in 1913 as a drill hall for the Territorial Army, exhibits an Edwardian Arts & Crafts architectural style. Following a significant restoration and modernisation completed in 2014, the space now blends its historical shell with contemporary amenities, preserving its distinctive character.

The main hall features a flat-floor configuration, offering considerable versatility for various events, capable of accommodating up to 500 standing guests or 300 in a seated arrangement. Lacking tiered balconies, sightlines for standing events can be influenced by crowd density, particularly towards the rear of the room. Seated layouts, however, generally provide unobstructed views of the stage, which can be configured flexibly. The hall's high vaulted ceiling, characteristic of its original design, contributes a natural reverberance; while this lends character to the acoustics, effective sound reinforcement through modern PA systems is crucial for achieving clarity and impact during amplified performances.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Ingress for events typically occurs via the main entrance on St Peter's Street, leading into a functional foyer area where bar services are usually provided. For standing shows, the flat floor fosters a direct and often energetic connection between the audience and performers, though density can be high at the front. Seated events, from theatre to cabaret setups, offer a more relaxed experience with dedicated viewing positions.

With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
