Tollwood Festival, established in 1988, is not a singular fixed structure but a recurring cultural event that temporarily transforms prominent urban spaces, notably Theresienwiese for its winter edition. The "venue" comprises an array of large-scale, purpose-built tensile structures and marquees designed for rapid assembly and disassembly. The architectural style is purely functional, emphasizing robust construction to shelter diverse programming. The principal performance space, the Musik-Arena, is a substantial tent capable of accommodating up to 5,000 patrons for standing concerts, with configurations adaptable for reduced capacities with partial seating.

The interior layout of the Musik-Arena features a vast, open-plan floor directly in front of the stage, offering unobstructed sightlines for those close to the performance. For specific productions, elevated viewing platforms or rear seating may be introduced. Other tents, such as the Weltsalon and Mercato, provide more intimate or flexible settings, often with modular furniture arrangements that can shift from seated discussions to open market stalls. Due to the inherent nature of large fabric tents, the acoustic environment presents significant challenges. Sound engineers rely heavily on sophisticated, well-tuned PA systems to manage reflections and potential reverberation within the expansive space. Entry to the festival grounds is fluid, with various pathways leading to the individual tent venues. Within the larger performance tents, multiple foyer bars are strategically placed, offering refreshments and fostering a convivial atmosphere prior to and during events. For popular concerts within the main performance tent, the standing floor can become quite densely packed, providing a direct, energetic connection to the artists. Other venues offer more relaxed, often seated, experiences. The crowd atmosphere is typically vibrant and diverse, mirroring the festival’s eclectic program.
