About Thekla: Layout, History & Architecture
The MV Thekla, originally constructed in Germany in 1958 as a coastal cargo vessel, underwent a significant transformation in the early 1980s under the vision of Ki Longfellow-Stanshall. Permanently moored in Bristol's East Mud Dock, its architecture is unequivocally defined by its utilitarian maritime origins, a functional design now repurposed for live music. The vessel's main performance space accommodates approximately 400 patrons within a single-deck configuration, preserving the low ceilings and steel bulkheads inherent to its former life as a ship.
