Opened in 2022 as a central component of the University of Liverpool's Yoko Ono Lennon Centre, The Tung Auditorium represents a sophisticated contemporary addition to Liverpool's performance spaces. Designed by Ellis Williams Architects with acoustic consultation from Arup, the 400-seat hall is conceived as a modern 'shoebox' concert hall, a configuration historically celebrated for its superior acoustic properties. The design prioritises natural sound, featuring a warm, timber-lined interior and complex geometries that diffuse and reflect sound without the need for extensive electronic reinforcement for most acoustic performances.

The seating arrangement is entirely tiered, ensuring excellent sightlines from every one of the 400 plush seats, with no structural obstructions whatsoever. This intimate yet expansive configuration fosters a direct connection between audience and performer. While primarily designed for classical, jazz, and spoken word events, the hall is acoustically adaptable for amplified music, though its inherent clarity means that even reinforced performances benefit from the space’s thoughtful design, avoiding the cavernous qualities sometimes found in larger, multi-purpose auditoria. The focus here is on sonic precision and audience immersion in the unvarnished sound.
