Nestled within the cavernous Victorian railway arches beneath Cannon Street Station, The Steelyard repurposes an industrial relic into a contemporary event space. Constructed as part of the late 19th-century railway infrastructure supporting the bridge over the River Thames, the venue retains its raw, utilitarian aesthetic. The primary hall comprises a series of connected brick arches, creating distinct yet fluid zones, with original brickwork and concrete flooring dictating the visual and tactile experience. There are no tiered balconies; all configurations are for flat-floor standing.
The capacity typically ranges from approximately 600 for intimate live performances to 1,000 for club nights, distributed across the main arched room and often a secondary, smaller archway space. Sightlines from the front are generally unobstructed towards the main stage, though the inherent design of the multiple archways can lead to partial obstructions by supporting pillars for those positioned further back or to the sides. The overall effect is one of immersion, with the structure itself becoming an integral part of the atmosphere.
Acoustically, the space presents a significant challenge inherent to its brick and concrete construction.
