Housed within the historic Sunny Bank Mills complex in Farsley, bordering Pudsey, The Old Woollen occupies a repurposed industrial building dating back to the late Victorian or early Edwardian period. Its architecture is characteristic of the region's textile heritage: robust brick construction, high ceilings, and an inherently open-plan structure designed for machinery and production lines. The conversion has preserved much of this industrial character, with exposed brickwork and structural elements contributing to a raw, authentic aesthetic.
The primary performance space is a large, flat-floored auditorium, providing a versatile environment primarily for standing events. A raised stage is positioned at one end, offering clear sightlines from most positions within the main floor, although in densely packed crowds, views can become partially obstructed towards the rear. There are no fixed tiered balconies; seating, if provided, is typically temporary and arranged for specific events. With a general capacity in the region of 300-500 depending on configuration, the space feels intimate yet offers ample room for movement. Acoustically, the high ceilings and hard surfaces of the original mill building create a lively, somewhat reverberant environment.
