About The Lodge: Layout, History & Architecture
"The Lodge" occupies a repurposed industrial structure on Ducie Street, originally constructed in 1968. Its architecture reflects a utilitarian, post-industrial Brutalism, characterised by a robust concrete and brick façade that prioritises function over embellishment. A comprehensive refurbishment in 2015 transformed the interior into a dedicated performance space, aiming for a stark, contemporary aesthetic. The main auditorium is a large, open room with a flat standing floor, accommodating an audience of up to 700. A smaller, elevated mezzanine platform is situated at the rear, offering a more distant, slightly elevated perspective, though it is not a full tiered balcony and seating here is limited.
Sightlines from the main standing floor are generally clear, benefiting from a well-positioned stage. However, the concrete construction of the hall presents a demanding acoustic environment. Sound reflection is a primary characteristic, necessitating extensive reliance on a finely tuned, robust PA system to achieve clarity and mitigate excessive reverberation.
