"The Grove" occupies a formidable former industrial structure on Newcastle’s Quayside, originally constructed in 1922 as a shipping chandlery warehouse. Its conversion in the late 1990s retained much of its inherent utilitarian character, blending robust early 20th-century brickwork and steel-frame construction with contemporary functionalist aesthetics. The main performance hall, a cavernous space with a flat concrete floor, boasts a standing capacity of approximately 1,500. Above the rear of the main floor, a smaller, cantilevered mezzanine provides an additional 200 unreserved seats.
Architecturally, the venue is defined by its exposed steel trusses, unadorned brick walls, and high ceiling, which contribute significantly to its acoustic profile. Sound within the hall is expansive, with a noticeable natural reverberance, particularly in the mid-to-high frequencies.
