About The Art School Union: Layout, History & Architecture

The Art School Union, originally constructed in 1905 as the 'Union Electric Works' factory, underwent a comprehensive adaptive reuse project completed in 2018. The architectural style blends its original industrial functionalism – characterized by expansive brick walls, exposed steel girders, and significant ceiling height – with contemporary interventions. The main auditorium maintains a largely open-plan configuration, offering a maximum standing capacity of 1,500. A steel-framed mezzanine, spanning the rear and sides of the hall, provides a seated capacity for 300, offering elevated sightlines over the main floor.

The stage is a fixed, raised platform, approximately 1.2 meters high. While the open design generally ensures unobstructed views from most positions on the ground floor, sightlines from directly behind supporting pillars for the mezzanine can be partially impeded. Acoustically, the hall's hard surfaces and considerable ceiling height mean a natural resonance is present. While this can lend an expansive quality to sound, the venue relies heavily on its installed, multi-array PA system for precise sound reinforcement and clarity across the space. The mezzanine seating areas typically receive a more direct sound field, offering a different auditory experience from the ground level.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entry to The Art School Union is managed through the main doors on Canal Street, where queues typically form under a sheltered canopy. Upon passing through security, attendees enter a spacious, industrial-chic foyer featuring two dedicated bars serving a range of beverages. The ground floor transforms into a dense standing pit during high-capacity events, fostering a direct and energetic connection with the stage. Those seeking a less physically immersive experience or an elevated vantage point will appreciate the mezzanine, where tiered seating offers clear sightlines over the main crowd and performance area. The atmosphere typically reflects the genre of the performance, from focused attentiveness during spoken-word events to an uninhibited energy during live music sets. With 1 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £130. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Arkells on 24th September 2026.
