Originally constructed in 1883 as the Plaça de Braus de Tarragona, a traditional bullring, Tarraco Arena underwent significant renovation between 2005 and 2006 to become a versatile multi-purpose event space. The exterior retains much of its original 19th-century bullring character, a circular form with tiered façades. Internally, the transformation introduced a state-of-the-art retractable dome, converting the open-air arena into a climate-controlled indoor venue. The hall offers a maximum capacity of approximately 10,800 spectators, configurable for diverse events from concerts to sporting competitions.

The core layout consists of a large central floor area, which can be configured for standing audiences, temporary seating, or a sports pitch. Surrounding this central space are the original, steeply raked tiers of permanent seating, offering broad, sweeping views of the stage or event area. Sightlines from the upper tiers are generally unobstructed, though distant, while the standing floor provides close proximity to the stage for amplified performances. Acoustically, the large, circular, and largely concrete interior presents inherent challenges; the high ceilings and hard surfaces result in significant natural reverberation. Effective sound delivery for live music and spoken word events relies heavily on a robust, carefully calibrated PA system to ensure clarity and mitigate echo.

Entering the arena typically involves a dispersed system of gates around the perimeter, a legacy of its original bullring design, which generally aids in crowd flow for ingress.
