About Studio 338 Boord Street: Layout, History & Architecture

Studio 338 occupies a large industrial structure on Boord Street, within London's Greenwich Peninsula. Originally conceived as a raw warehouse space, the venue underwent extensive renovation and expansion following a devastating fire in 2016, reopening with a significantly reconfigured layout. The predominant architectural style remains functional industrial, characterized by high ceilings, exposed structural elements, and a liberal use of concrete and metal, particularly within the main 'Terrace' area, which features a prominent glass roof and expansive, open-plan floor. The overall capacity for major events often extends to approximately 3000 patrons.

The internal configuration comprises multiple distinct areas, most notably the main 'Terrace' room, which functions as a large, flat standing floor. This space is designed to emulate an open-air environment, partially covered by the aforementioned glass roof, providing a unique semi-outdoor experience year-round. Adjoining the Terrace are additional rooms, 'The Loft' and 'The Void', offering more intimate or varied sonic environments. Sightlines across the main floor are generally unobstructed due to the open plan, though specific viewing angles can vary with crowd density.

Acoustically, the venue’s industrial, high-ceilinged design with hard surfaces presents a challenging environment. While Studio 338 is equipped with powerful, purpose-built sound reinforcement systems, the natural acoustics of such a vast, cavernous space mean that the sound profile is heavily dependent on the quality and calibration of the installed PA. Reverberation can be noticeable, particularly at lower crowd densities, requiring careful engineering to maintain clarity and impact across the frequency spectrum. The smaller, more enclosed spaces offer a different acoustic experience, typically more immediate due to lower ceilings and reduced volume.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Ingress to Studio 338 typically involves a clearly delineated queue system along Boord Street, leading to a secure entry point. Patrons pass through standard security checks and bag searches before entering the internal foyer areas, where initial bars are accessible. The atmosphere within the main 'Terrace' room is defined by its expansive, high-energy environment, where the flat standing floor encourages dense crowd interaction. The unique semi-outdoor aspect, even under the glass roof, contributes to a distinctive communal feeling, particularly during larger electronic music events.
