Sidney and Matilda, established in late 2018, occupies a converted industrial premise on Sidney Street in Sheffield’s city centre. The architecture reflects its origins: a robust brick structure typical of Sheffield's manufacturing past, now repurposed with a contemporary minimalist aesthetic. The venue is characterised by multiple distinct spaces, with the primary performance area located in the basement. This main room features a flat standing floor with a modest capacity, typically accommodating around 250-300 patrons. The stage is low-set, fostering a direct and intimate proximity between performers and audience.
Sightlines in the main performance area are generally unimpeded due to the flat-floor layout, though height variations within a dense crowd can naturally affect visibility from the rear. Acoustically, the basement's low ceilings and predominantly hard surfaces mean sound is immediate and direct. While relying heavily on its installed PA system for clarity and projection, the inherent architecture lends itself to a full, dense sound that can feel particularly immersive for amplified music. This is not a venue designed for classical subtlety, but for energetic contemporary performances, where the acoustics contribute to a raw, engaging experience rather than a "pristine" one. Upstairs spaces include a bar and smaller areas which can host more intimate performances or art installations, each with their own distinct acoustic characteristics driven by their individual dimensions and finishes.

Entry to Sidney and Matilda is via the main entrance on Sidney Street, leading into the ground-floor bar and common area. From here, patrons typically descend to the basement for the main live performances. The standing pit can become dense and warm during popular events, creating an energetic and close-quarters atmosphere that is characteristic of intimate club venues.
