Royal & Derngate comprises two distinct auditoriums and various ancillary spaces, situated on Guildhall Road in the heart of Northampton. The Royal Theatre, originally constructed in 1884, exemplifies Victorian theatre architecture with a traditional proscenium arch stage, tiered seating across stalls, dress circle, upper circle, and several private boxes. Its capacity is approximately 583. Acoustically, the Royal benefits from its classic design, offering a naturally resonant environment for unamplified theatre and classical performance, though sightlines from some upper circle and box seats can be partially obstructed by supporting pillars inherent to its age.
Adjacent to the Royal, the Derngate is a more modern, adaptable space, opened in its current configuration in 1993, with a capacity of up to 1,800 for standing concert events or around 894 for seated theatrical productions. This hall can transform from a flat-floor general admission area to a tiered, raked auditorium. Given its more contemporary construction, often featuring concrete elements, the acoustics for amplified music performances are heavily dependent on installed PA systems and the sound engineering specific to each event, rather than relying on natural room resonance for clarity across its full volume.
