About Rapture: Layout, History & Architecture
Rapture occupies a substantially re-engineered former fish curing facility, originally constructed in 1898 on Kirkwall's Shore Street, directly fronting Kirkwall Bay. The building underwent a significant architectural intervention in 2016, transforming its utilitarian Victorian industrial shell into a multi-purpose live event space. The core design philosophy retains the raw aesthetic of its past, featuring exposed red brick walls, original steel support beams, and polished concrete floors, creating an environment that blends industrial heritage with contemporary functionality.
The main auditorium provides a large, single-level standing area capable of accommodating approximately 900 patrons. A smaller, cantilevered mezzanine extends along the western wall, offering a limited capacity for around 150 seated attendees; however, some views from the rear of this section are partially obstructed by the steel uprights integral to the building's original structure. The high ceilings and predominantly hard surfaces mean the sound profile is naturally reverberant; sophisticated acoustic panelling and a meticulously tuned PA system are crucial for clarity, preventing the space from sounding overly cavernous during high-volume performances. The hall is not acoustically 'neutral' but rather boasts a distinct, robust sonic character dependent on expert sound engineering.

Entry to the hall is via the main doors on Shore Street, directly fronting Kirkwall Bay. Patrons enter a compact foyer leading to the primary bar area, which can become congested during peak ingress periods. The main standing floor typically fills to a high density, offering direct proximity to the performance, a characteristic of the venue's intimate scale. Visibility from the ground floor is generally unobstructed, ensuring a clear view of the stage. For those on the mezzanine, the experience offers an elevated perspective, yet a few sightlines towards stage right can be partially compromised by the industrial structural beams that define the space's character.
