The Playa de Poniente – Torre del Mar, constructed in 1992, represents a late-modernist architectural approach to coastal leisure facilities. Its design, characterised by a robust concrete frame and extensive glazing, reflects a functional aesthetic intended to withstand the marine environment while maximising natural light and views of the English Channel. The primary performance space, a multi-purpose auditorium, features a large, flat standing floor with a configurable capacity of up to 2,000 for amplified concerts, and retractable raked seating which reduces capacity to 1,200 for seated events.
Acoustically, the hall's concrete and glass surfaces present a challenging environment for unamplified performances, leading to a heavy reliance on sophisticated sound reinforcement systems. Bass frequencies can occasionally prove overwhelming in the standing area without careful mixing, though the upper balcony offers a slightly more balanced, albeit still highly amplified, listening experience. Sightlines from the front half of the main floor are generally unobstructed, while the tiered balcony provides clear views across the stage, though the uppermost rows can feel somewhat removed from the performance.
