About Peterson Seabase: Layout, History & Architecture
Built in 1978 as a cold-storage and logistics facility serving Aberdeen's North Sea oil and fishing industries, Peterson Seabase underwent a significant conversion in 2005 to become a flexible events venue. Its architectural lineage is firmly rooted in functionalist industrial design, characterised by raw concrete, exposed steel girders, and expansive, high-ceilinged bays. The main auditorium, retaining much of its original structural integrity, offers a vast, unobstructed flat standing floor with a listed capacity of 2,000 patrons.
Above the main floor, a cantilevered mezzanine provides a limited, unreserved seating area for approximately 300, offering elevated views of the stage, though some sightlines can be partially obscured by structural supports, a common characteristic of adapted industrial spaces. The inherent acoustic properties of such a concrete and steel shell are naturally challenging; the high ceilings and hard surfaces produce considerable reverberation. Consequently, the performance experience is heavily dependent on the quality and calibration of the installed line array sound reinforcement system, which is substantial and modern, designed to counteract the building's inherent sonic reflections rather than complementing them.

Entry into the Seabase is via the primary entrance on Regent Quay, leading directly into a broad foyer where two main bars are positioned, effectively managing pre-show and interval crowds without significant bottlenecks. Once inside the main hall, the standing pit offers direct proximity to the stage, creating a dense, high-energy atmosphere during peak performances. For those on the mezzanine, the experience is more observational, benefiting from an elevated perspective but with the trade-off of distance from the immediate crowd dynamic.
