About Paunchy Cats: Layout, History & Architecture
Constructed in 1972, Paunchy Cats occupies a purpose-built structure conceived in the Brutalist style prevalent during that era. Its façade, a composition of raw concrete and pre-cast aggregate panels, presents a stark yet functional aesthetic, typical of public buildings from the period. The interior features a significant main auditorium with a stated capacity of 950 standing patrons. The floor is flat, allowing for flexible crowd movement and direct proximity to the raised stage, which stands approximately 1.2 metres high. Above the rear of the main floor, a single, steeply raked balcony provides an elevated viewing experience for approximately 150 seated individuals. While the sightlines from the balcony are generally unimpeded, the raw concrete construction of the hall means acoustic projection is highly dependent on the installed sound reinforcement system. Unamplified sound can exhibit a noticeable reverberance, requiring diligent engineering to achieve clarity.
The utilitarian design prioritises volume and durability over intricate ornamentation. The ceiling, a series of exposed concrete ribs, contributes to the somewhat industrial character of the space. Entrances and internal corridors are wide and unadorned, reflecting the building's original intent as a multi-purpose municipal hall. The stage itself is generously sized, allowing for diverse productions, though the backstage facilities are functional rather than expansive.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Ingress to Paunchy Cats is managed through a series of double doors facing Schlossgasse, leading into a modest, unadorned foyer. Here, two compact bar areas offer standard refreshments, often becoming congested during peak pre-show and interval periods. Within the main auditorium, the standing pit provides an immersive experience, with crowd density naturally increasing closer to the stage. Sightlines from the perimeter of the standing area are generally good due to the stage's elevation. For those preferring a more relaxed view, the rear balcony offers a clear, elevated perspective over the main floor, although it lacks the direct engagement of the standing area. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The atmosphere within the hall is typically robust, often amplified by the concrete acoustics. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
