Patterns occupies a multi-level structure on Brighton's Madeira Drive, integrated into the historic seafront infrastructure. While parts of the surrounding complex trace their origins to the late 19th century, the building housing the venue itself reflects a more functional, mid-20th-century architectural approach, utilizing concrete and steel within the adapted fabric of the older seafront.

The venue primarily features two distinct public spaces. The ground floor functions as a relaxed bar and social area, offering a more laid-back atmosphere. The principal performance zone is the basement club, a compact, subterranean room designed for high-energy events. This space is configured with a flat standing floor and typically accommodates approximately 350-400 patrons. There are no tiered balconies; sightlines are direct, but for those further from the stage, visibility can become partially obscured by crowd density during peak times. A third, seasonal space is the rooftop terrace, providing an open-air bar with panoramic views over the English Channel.

The basement club's construction, characterized by concrete walls, a relatively low ceiling, and minimal soft furnishings, results in a very direct and 'live' acoustic environment. While this immediacy can enhance the impact of electronic music and amplified sets, it necessitates a powerful and precisely tuned sound reinforcement system to manage natural room reflections and maintain sonic clarity. Without robust PA intervention, the inherent characteristics of the space could lead to a less defined audio profile. Furthermore, the compact nature of the room means it quickly becomes warm as crowd numbers increase.

Entry to Patterns is typically managed via its main doors situated directly on Madeira Drive. Standard security protocols, including bag checks and ID verification, are in place. Upon entering, the ground-floor bar area serves as a transitional space before patrons descend into the basement performance room. The atmosphere within the basement is characteristically intimate and energetic, fostering close proximity to the stage and performers. Crowd density can be substantial, particularly during popular events, contributing to a vibrant, albeit sometimes intensely packed, environment.
