About Palacio Euskalduna: Layout, History & Architecture

Opened in 1999, Palacio Euskalduna presents a striking example of late 20th-century modernist architecture, conceived by architects Federico Soriano and Dolores Palacios. Its design, often interpreted as a ship under construction in a dry dock, cleverly integrates industrial aesthetic with cultural function. The main auditorium, Sala A1, is configured with 2,164 seats across multiple tiered levels, including stalls, two principal balconies, and side boxes, providing varied perspectives of the stage. The space is engineered for versatility, capable of hosting opera, orchestral concerts, ballet, and large-scale congresses.

Beyond the main auditorium, the space encompasses numerous smaller halls, exhibition areas, and multi-purpose rooms, allowing for simultaneous events. The construction, featuring prominent use of concrete, steel, and glass, creates a controlled sound environment. While modern acoustic engineering is employed to optimize sound projection, particularly for unamplified performances, its large volume and contemporary materials mean that amplified music benefits significantly from sophisticated sound reinforcement systems to ensure clarity throughout the upper reaches and side boxes. Sightlines from most seated positions are generally unobstructed, though perspective naturally shifts considerably in the upper tiers.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Ingress is facilitated by multiple entry points leading into expansive, light-filled foyers, often adorned with contemporary art, offering views of the river. These spacious areas typically feature several bar facilities across different levels, easing pre-show and interval congestion. Inside the main auditorium, the experience is predominantly seated, with the tiered layout ensuring clear sightlines for most attendees. The atmosphere within the hall adapts to the nature of the performance, ranging from the hushed reverence of classical music to the engaged attentiveness for amplified concerts. With 6 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £140.16. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Shinova Bilbao on 20th November 2026.
