About Operaen: Layout, History & Architecture

Opened in 2005, Operaen stands as a prominent example of contemporary Danish architecture, designed by Henning Larsen Architects. Constructed with an imposing glass façade, a large, dark wood roof that appears to float above, and interior elements featuring maple wood, the structure commands attention from its waterfront location. The main auditorium, known as Store Scene, is a grand, horseshoe-shaped space with a capacity of approximately 1,400 patrons across its orchestra stalls and three tiered balconies. A smaller, more intimate experimental stage, Takkelloftet, provides a contrasting configuration for avant-garde productions.

Sightlines throughout Store Scene are generally excellent, a result of the careful tiered design that eliminates the need for supporting pillars. The acoustic profile of the main hall is meticulously engineered for the unamplified performance of opera and classical music. Its design, incorporating specific wall angles and material choices, focuses on precise sound projection and diffusion, ensuring clarity and resonance without heavy reliance on electronic amplification. This results in a direct and immersive auditory experience, though the scale of the hall means nuances are best appreciated from central seating positions.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entry to the space is through its expansive glass-fronted foyer, offering panoramic views of the København harbour. This multi-level area accommodates several bars, providing pre-performance and interval refreshments. Given its primary function as an opera house, performances are exclusively seated, with no standing pit. Patrons typically experience well-managed ingress and egress, with ample space in the foyer zones before performances commence. The atmosphere is generally one of focused appreciation, reflecting the nature of the productions staged. With 1 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £327.46. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Mogwai Copenhagen on 8th November 2026.
