About One Ninety Four: Layout, History & Architecture
Originally constructed in the early 1900s as a light industrial warehouse, One Ninety Four underwent a comprehensive conversion in 2003, re-emerging as a dedicated live music venue. The architectural style retains much of its utilitarian charm, featuring an unadorned brick facade, high ceilings, and exposed steel girders within the main hall. With a standing capacity of approximately 900, the space is primarily configured as a single, expansive flat floor, fostering direct engagement between audience and performer. A narrow, slightly elevated mezzanine at the rear offers an alternative viewing perspective and accommodates accessible seating requirements.
Sightlines from the main standing floor are generally unobstructed, though views can become more restricted in dense crowds towards the front. The rear mezzanine provides a clear, elevated vantage point of the stage, albeit at a greater distance. Acoustically, the inherent resonance of the industrial structure has been largely mitigated by extensive modern treatment, including strategically placed acoustic panelling and hanging baffles. While the sound is controlled and capable of handling significant reinforcement, the volume and original material composition mean that exceptional sonic clarity relies heavily on adept sound engineering rather than inherent acoustic perfection.
