About Norwich Arts Centre: Layout, History & Architecture
Norwich Arts Centre occupies the former St Swithun's Church, a medieval parish church predominantly rebuilt following an 1880s fire after a lightning strike. In the mid-1970s, the deconsecrated building was repurposed, undergoing conversion into a dedicated arts venue. Architecturally, the space retains a sense of its ecclesiastical past with high ceilings and a largely open nave, which now forms the main auditorium. The capacity of the main hall is approximately 300 for standing configurations, or around 150 for seated events. There are no tiered balconies; sightlines for performances are generally clear from the flat standing floor, though optimal viewing is achieved closer to the stage.
Due to its ecclesiastical origins, the main hall inherently possesses a degree of natural reverberation. While modern sound reinforcement systems are deployed to ensure clarity and impact, the room's live acoustic character provides a distinct, rather than an anechoic, sound profile. This can lend a vibrant energy to performances but necessitates skilled sound engineering for optimal balance across various genres. A smaller bar area provides an additional, more intimate space for acoustic sets or pre/post-show gatherings.
