Constructed in 1971 by the Greater London Council’s architectural division, Metropolis stands as a formidable example of late-modernist brutalism on the Royal Albert Dock. Its design prioritises sheer volume and robust materials, resulting in a stark, exposed concrete edifice that reflects its industrial dockland setting. The main auditorium, a vast single-hall space, accommodates up to 4,500 standing patrons on its expansive flat floor. A single, shallow-raked balcony extends along the rear of the hall, providing seating for an additional 1,000, offering elevated views though at a considerable distance from the stage.

Sightlines from the standing floor are generally clear for those within the front half of the space; however, further back, crowd density can significantly impede visibility. The balcony seats provide an unobstructed perspective of the performance area, albeit a panoramic one. Acoustically, the hall presents a challenge inherent to its architectural style. The high ceilings and predominantly concrete surfaces contribute to a naturally reverberant environment, which sound engineers must actively manage. Performances rely heavily on a meticulously calibrated and powerful PA system to articulate sound, as the venue’s inherent acoustics can otherwise lead to a cavernous, less defined audio experience.

Entering Metropolis through its primary entrance, which directly faces the Royal Albert Dock, patrons are greeted by a functional, multi-level foyer. Bars are strategically positioned on both the ground floor and the balcony level, designed for efficient service during peak ingress and intermissions. The standing pit on the main floor can become notably dense, offering an immediate and often intense proximity to the performers for those willing to navigate the crowds. Alternatively, the balcony provides a more relaxed, seated experience with elevated sightlines and direct access to amenities.
