About MBG Metastadt: Layout, History & Architecture

Constructed in 1989 as part of the ambitious Wina Docklands regeneration project, MBG Metastadt exemplifies late Brutalist architecture, characterised by its imposing concrete façade and robust, functional design. The building’s substantial form occupies a prominent position on the East Bank of the River Wina, its primary entrance facing the water. With a stated capacity of 7,500 for standing events and adaptable configurations for 4,000 seated, the space is designed for large-scale gatherings.

Internally, the auditorium features a vast, flat standing floor, providing unobstructed views of the stage from the front sections. A single, steeply raked tiered balcony extends across the rear of the hall, offering a broader perspective, though individual sightlines can vary slightly depending on the specific seating arrangement for any given production. The raw concrete construction, while aesthetically striking, results in an acoustically challenging environment; reverberation is pronounced, and the clarity of sound relies almost entirely on the quality and configuration of the touring sound reinforcement system. Consequently, acoustic performance varies significantly between events.

The infrastructure prioritises utility over ornamentation, with exposed ductwork and unadorned surfaces defining much of the interior. Despite its utilitarian aesthetic, the sheer scale of the hall makes it a significant venue for touring acts and large-format events in Wien.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Ingress at MBG Metastadt is managed through multiple designated entry points along the main riverside façade, designed to streamline crowds for large-capacity events. Once inside, attendees enter a spacious, albeit unembellished, foyer area where several functional bar stations are strategically located to serve the volume of patrons. For standing events, the main floor can become densely packed, particularly towards the stage barrier, creating an intense, immersive experience. Patrons opting for the rear balcony benefit from a clearer, elevated view of the entire stage and its expansive LED screens, generally with more personal space than the standing pit. The crowd atmosphere typically mirrors the energy of the performers, amplified by the cavernous nature of the hall.
