About Mattioli Arena: Layout, History & Architecture

Mattioli Arena, formerly known as the Morningside Arena, opened its doors in 2016 as a purpose-built multi-sport and event complex. Its architectural style is resolutely modern and functional, comprising significant elements of concrete and steel in its construction. Primarily serving as the home court for the Leicester Riders basketball team, the facility is designed around a central court or flat floor area, surrounded by steeply tiered seating that accommodates approximately 2,400 spectators for sports events. For concerts and other live performances, the standing floor area can expand the capacity upwards of 3,000, without the traditional tiered balconies found in older theatrical venues.

Sightlines from the fixed tiered seating are generally clear and unobstructed due to the stadium-style design, free from architectural pillars. However, views for attendees on the flat standing floor can be compromised by crowd density, particularly towards the rear of the space. Acoustically, the hall presents the inherent challenges common to modern multi-purpose sports arenas. The prevalence of hard, reflective surfaces – concrete walls, steel girders, and a high ceiling – means sound clarity for amplified music relies heavily on robust and expertly tuned professional PA systems. The large volume of the auditorium can lead to noticeable reverberation, requiring significant audio engineering to achieve a balanced and articulate sound profile across the frequency spectrum. It is not acoustically designed for unamplified or naturally resonant performances.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Ingress to Mattioli Arena is managed efficiently through its main entrance on Ellis Way. Inside, the foyer areas feature standard arena concession stands and bars. For live music events, the experience bifurcates: the energy of the standing pit directly in front of the stage offers close proximity to performers, albeit with potential sightline obstructions further back, while the tiered seating provides a more consistent, elevated perspective on the proceedings. Crowd atmosphere typically mirrors the energy of the performing act or sporting event, often vibrant and engaged.

With 4 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £81. The next confirmed event on the calendar is 2026 Darts World Grand Prix - Friday on 2nd October 2026.
