Originally conceived as Manchester Central Station, this grand Victorian edifice opened in 1880, serving as a primary railway terminus for the city. Designed by architect John Fowler, the structure is a notable example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture, dominated by its vast, arch-span train shed, often described as a 'cathedral to steam'. After ceasing operations as a station in 1969, the building underwent significant transformation, reopening in 1986 as an exhibition and conference centre, initially known as G-Mex, and later rebranded as Manchester Central in 2007.

The primary performance space, the Central Hall, retains the impressive scale of the original train shed. It features an expansive, flat floor area beneath its iconic arched roof, allowing for highly flexible configurations. For concerts, this typically translates to a large standing pit, with temporary seating risers often installed at the rear or sides for seated events, accommodating approximately 10,000 standing patrons or up to 6,000 in a fully seated setup. Given the sheer volume and hard surfaces of the former station, the natural acoustics of the hall present a significant challenge. Sound is prone to considerable natural reverberation, necessitating a robust, well-engineered PA system and extensive sound reinforcement to achieve clarity and impact for live performances. There are no fixed tiered balconies in the traditional theatre sense, meaning sightlines for seated configurations are dependent on the specific riser setup for each event, with potential for distance affecting the view towards the stage.
