About MacArts: Layout, History & Architecture
MacArts, situated in Galashiels, occupies the former St. Andrew's Church, a building originally constructed between 1876 and 1877. The architecture reflects a Scottish Baronial style, incorporating distinct Gothic Revival elements with its dressed stone facade, arched windows, and a prominent bell tower. Following extensive renovation, the space was repurposed and opened as MacArts in 2013, transitioning from a place of worship to a dynamic arts venue.
The main auditorium, once the church's nave, features a flat standing floor, allowing for flexible configurations including a maximum capacity of up to 200 for standing events or around 150 with a fully seated layout. A raised stage is positioned at the former chancel end, providing a clear focal point. An upper gallery runs along the side and rear, offering an elevated perspective of the stage, though sightlines from certain positions within the gallery may be partially obscured by railings depending on the specific event setup.
Acoustically, the building's original design with its high ceilings and stone construction means the hall naturally possesses a degree of reverberation. While acoustic treatments have been integrated during the conversion, effective sound delivery for live performances relies significantly on a well-tuned and robust PA system to manage the natural room characteristics and ensure vocal clarity and instrumental definition across the space.
