Low Four Studios, established in 2016, occupies a distinct space within the historic Great Northern Warehouse complex in central Manchester. The warehouse itself, a formidable example of Victorian industrial architecture, dates back to the late 19th century, originally functioning as a major railway goods transfer and storage facility. The studio’s integration into this heritage structure involved a careful transformation of a former industrial unit within Deansgate Mews into a modern, acoustically treated recording and live broadcast environment.
The internal architecture of the live performance area is fundamentally contemporary, prioritising acoustic integrity and functional efficiency over grand design. It presents a clean, utilitarian aesthetic with carefully considered surfaces and materials designed to control sound. The space typically accommodates a compact, standing-only audience, with capacities generally ranging from 100 to 150 patrons, fostering an intimate atmosphere. The performance stage is a low, elevated platform, providing direct sightlines from the flat standing floor, ensuring close proximity to performers from most vantage points within the relatively small room.
As a purpose-built recording studio, the acoustics of the live room are meticulously engineered for clarity and controlled sound capture.
