About Leamington Spa Assembly: Layout, History & Architecture

Originally constructed as The Hippodrome cinema and variety theatre, Leamington Spa Assembly opened its doors in 1936. The building exhibits a distinctive Art Deco architectural style, characterised by its clean lines, geometric patterns, and imposing facade on Spencer Street. Following decades as a cinema and then a bingo hall, the space underwent conversion to its current incarnation as a live music venue, preserving many of its period features within the grand main auditorium.

The hall operates primarily as a standing venue, with a substantial flat floor area directly in front of the stage, accommodating up to approximately 1000 patrons. Above this, a tiered balcony provides fixed seating, offering elevated sightlines across the performance space. While the Art Deco design lends a certain grandeur, the acoustics, owing to its initial purpose as a cinema, are functional rather than acoustically tailored for amplified music. Sound reproduction relies heavily on the installed PA system, which effectively projects across the cavernous room; however, the lively reverberation characteristic of such large, rectangular spaces can sometimes lead to a less defined sound in certain areas, particularly at the rear of the standing floor.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entry typically funnels through the main doors on Spencer Street, with queueing managed along the pavement. Inside, multiple well-positioned bars are accessible within the foyer and the main auditorium, easing crowd flow. The ground floor standing area can become dense during peak performances, offering an intimate yet energetic proximity to the stage. For those preferring a more relaxed viewing experience, the tiered balcony provides a comfortable vantage point with generally unobstructed views. The atmosphere often reflects the eclectic programming, from high-energy rock gigs to more subdued seated performances. With 2 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £147.02. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Macy Gray on 7th November 2026.
