About Laboral Teatro: Layout, History & Architecture
Inaugurated in 1955 as an integral component of the monumental Universidad Laboral de Gijón complex, Laboral Teatro stands as a significant example of mid-20th-century Spanish architecture. Designed by Luis Moya Blanco, the building embodies a grandiose Neo-Herrerian style, characterized by its imposing scale, robust stonework, and adherence to classical architectural principles. This design reflects the era's ambition to create civic structures of enduring presence.
The auditorium accommodates 1,500 patrons across a main floor and several carefully tiered balconies. The seating arrangement is designed to offer clear sightlines, with a significant rake ensuring good visibility from most positions. However, the considerable depth of the hall means views from the uppermost tiers, while unobstructed, can be distant.
Acoustically, the space was engineered primarily for traditional theatrical productions and classical music, delivering a natural, somewhat dry reverberation suited to unamplified sound. For contemporary concerts and amplified performances, the hall relies on modern, supplementary sound reinforcement systems, which are effectively integrated to provide clarity and directness, working in conjunction with the hall's inherent acoustic profile rather than attempting to override it.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Entering the hall involves traversing the expansive, solemn foyers of the broader Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura complex, transitioning from its monumental exterior to the theatre's more focused, yet still grand, interior. Performances here are predominantly seated affairs, fostering an attentive, observational atmosphere suitable for the theatre's design. Bar facilities are typically available within the foyer areas, managing crowd flow efficiently given the seated configuration. The experience prioritizes unobstructed viewing and comfort over a high-density standing pit environment.
With 5 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £130.88. The next confirmed event on the calendar is El Kanka on 3rd October 2026.
