Constructed in 1900, the building that now houses KOKO began its life as the Camden Theatre, an opulent Victorian playhouse designed by W.G.R. Sprague. Its architectural style blends late Victorian grandeur with decorative Art Nouveau flourishes, evident in the intricate plasterwork, gilded detailing, and ornate ceiling. Originally serving as a theatre and later a cinema, the space transitioned into a prominent music venue known as the Camden Palace in the 1980s, before its rebranding as KOKO. Following a significant fire in 2020 and subsequent extensive refurbishment, the auditorium reopened, preserving its historic character while integrating advanced performance infrastructure.
