About Kelvingrove Bandstand: Layout, History & Architecture
Originally constructed in 1924 as part of the Scottish Exhibition for National Art, Industry and Sport, the Kelvingrove Bandstand is an open-air amphitheatre nestled within Glasgow's Kelvingrove Park. Designed by James Miller, its architecture blends Art Deco influences with classical elements, featuring a distinctive shell-like stage canopy and a sweeping, tiered audience area. Following a substantial restoration, the space reopened in 2014, revitalised for contemporary events.
The bandstand accommodates approximately 2,500 patrons, featuring a standing area directly in front of the stage and extensive tiered concrete seating that radiates outwards and upwards. This configuration generally offers unobstructed sightlines across the performance area, particularly from the elevated seating. As an open-air venue, acoustic performance is predominantly governed by the installed PA system; natural reverberation is minimal, and sound quality can be influenced by prevailing weather conditions, especially wind. The tiered design, however, aids in sound projection to the seated sections.
