About Gijón Life: Layout, History & Architecture
Gijón Life began its existence in 1978 as a robust maritime engineering workshop, part of the industrial expansion along Gijón's Dique Sur. Its conversion in 2010 saw the retention of its imposing post-industrial brutalist façade, contrasted with a largely modernist interior renovation. The main hall can accommodate up to 1,800 patrons for standing events or be reconfigured with retractable seating for 800. A dedicated, fixed raked seating tier is positioned at the rear of the hall, complemented by a smaller cantilevered balcony offering an additional 200 seats.
The inherent architectural profile of the space, characterized by high ceilings and expansive concrete surfaces, necessitates a professionally engineered and robust modern PA system to achieve optimal sound clarity. While powerful amplification can project sound effectively, the natural reverberation within the upper volume of the hall requires careful management from FOH engineers. Sightlines from the flat standing floor are generally direct, though at maximum capacity, views of the very front of the stage may be partially obstructed for those further back or of shorter stature. The raked seating offers an elevated perspective, typically providing clear sightlines over the standing crowd. From the upper balcony, views are unobstructed but present a more distant, overarching perspective of the stage.
