The current Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, inaugurated in 1981, stands on Augustusplatz in Leipzig, Germany. This modern concert hall, designed by Rudolf Skoda, Eberhard Göschel, and Horst Krüger, represents a significant architectural statement with its functionalist design and expansive public spaces. The building houses two primary performance areas: the Großer Saal (Great Hall) and the Kleiner Saal (Small Hall).
The Großer Saal, with a capacity of approximately 1900, employs a 'vineyard' style configuration, where tiered seating sections rise around the central stage from multiple angles. This layout ensures generally excellent sightlines for most patrons, fostering an immersive experience. The acoustics within the Großer Saal are highly regarded internationally for their clarity, warmth, and balanced resonance, specifically engineered for unamplified orchestral and choral performances.
