About Gasometer: Layout, History & Architecture
The Gasometer complex in Wien-Simmering comprises four colossal brick-built gas tanks, originally constructed between 1896 and 1899 to supply the city with gas. Their monumental, neo-Gothic industrial architecture served their purpose until the advent of natural gas in the 1980s. The acclaimed conversion project, undertaken from 1999 to 2001, reimagined these historic shells into a mixed-use urban quarter. Gasometer B, specifically, was redeveloped by Coop Himmelb(l)au, transforming its interior into the primary live events venue known as Bank Austria Halle.
Within Gasometer B's cylindrical brick envelope, the performance space seats approximately 3,000 to 4,000 patrons, adaptable for both standing and seated configurations. For concerts, the layout typically features a large, flat standing floor directly before the stage, providing an unobstructed frontal view for those in the main pit. A tiered balcony level offers additional seating or standing areas, generally providing good sightlines, though the sheer scale of the circular internal volume means perspectives can vary. The hall’s acoustics, defined by its high ceilings and the interplay of original brickwork with modern concrete and steel, necessitate a robust, contemporary sound reinforcement system to achieve clarity and impact across the large space, inherent in such industrial conversions rather than purpose-built auditoriums.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Entering Gasometer B involves navigating through the contemporary annexes and integrated retail areas of the complex before reaching the main event foyer. Foyer bars are typically well-distributed, managing crowd flow before and between performances. Once inside the main hall, the standing pit can become quite dense, offering direct proximity to the stage that defines the experience for many live music events. Those opting for the balcony benefit from an elevated, broader perspective of the stage and the overall crowd dynamics. The atmosphere is generally energetic, a characteristic of a large-capacity hall designed for contemporary music and performances, drawing a diverse audience.
With 1 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £333.54. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Europe on 17th October 2026.
