About Dignity Health Arena: Layout, History & Architecture
Originally constructed in 1989 as the Icardo Center, this multi-purpose indoor arena on the campus of California State University, Bakersfield, was rebranded and updated in 2023 as Dignity Health Arena. Its architecture is characteristic of late 20th-century university athletic facilities: a largely functional design dominated by concrete and steel, prioritising utility over ornate aesthetics. The space can accommodate approximately 3,495 seated patrons for basketball, with configurations for concerts and other events allowing for greater capacity through floor-level standing.
The primary layout features tiered seating rising from a central floor area. For musical performances, a stage is typically erected on one side of the floor, creating both general admission standing areas and seated views. Sightlines from the tiered seats are generally unobstructed, though those in the very highest rows might find the stage distant. Like many multi-purpose arenas of its era, the hall's hard, reflective surfaces, particularly the floor and ceiling, present acoustic challenges. While modern sound reinforcement systems are deployed to project clarity, the natural reverb of the voluminous concrete structure means the soundscape relies heavily on the quality and configuration of the touring PA, rather than inherent acoustic design.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Ingress into the arena is managed through several main entry points, designed to handle large crowds efficiently. Once inside, the concourses offer standard concession stands and limited bar service, typical for a university venue. For concerts, the atmosphere can range from energetic in the standing pit directly before the stage, to more reserved in the upper-tier seating. While the standing area offers direct proximity, the elevated seats provide a broader perspective of the stage and production, albeit with a greater acoustic challenge due to the arena's reflective properties. With 26 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £19.49. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Calgary Wranglers at on 17th October 2026.
