About Deutsches Theater: Layout, History & Architecture
The Deutsches Theater, located on Schwanthalerstraße, opened its doors in 1896, originally showcasing a lavish Neo-Baroque architectural style by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. After extensive destruction during World War II, the venue was largely rebuilt and reopened in 1951. A significant renovation between 2008 and 2014 meticulously restored much of the historical foyer and façade while thoroughly modernizing the main auditorium, the Festspielhaus, and its technical infrastructure. This blend results in a grand, ornate entrance leading into a functional, contemporary performance space.
The Festspielhaus is a traditional proscenium arch theatre, featuring tiered seating across the stalls and two balconies, accommodating approximately 1,600 patrons.
