Originally constructed in 1867 as Mayfield railway station, this vast structure later served as a parcels depot before its dereliction and subsequent repurposing. Architecturally, it embodies a robust Victorian industrial aesthetic, characterised by its imposing brickwork, exposed steel girders, and expansive, raw concrete floors. The space functions primarily as a flexible, multi-purpose event hall, eschewing the traditional fixed features of a conventional performance venue. Its immense scale allows for configurations catering to capacities often exceeding 10,000, distributed across its primary area, 'The Depot', and supplementary spaces like 'The Concourse' and 'The Archive'.
The internal layout is predominantly a flat, open floor, which, while offering considerable flexibility for event design, means sightlines are largely dependent on the stage placement and crowd density. Pillars inherent to the original railway structure can occasionally obstruct views for those not positioned centrally or towards the front. Acoustically, the hall presents a formidable challenge. Its vast, cavernous dimensions and hard, reflective surfaces – brick walls, concrete floors, and steel ceilings – naturally generate significant reverberation.
