About Club Puschkin: Layout, History & Architecture

Club Puschkin occupies the building of the former Puschkin-Lichtspiele, a cinema constructed in 1957 during the German Democratic Republic era. The architecture reflects a functionalist, post-war design, prioritizing utility over ornamentation with a robust, unpretentious concrete and rendered facade. Following its conversion in the early 1990s, the space was adapted for live music and club nights, retaining much of its original structural character. The main auditorium, formerly the cinema screen and seating area, now functions primarily as a flat standing floor directly in front of the stage, accommodating an approximate capacity of 500-600 patrons for concerts.

Sightlines across the main floor are generally unobstructed, though specific vantage points near the stage extremities can be partially obscured by the typical lateral crowd density during sold-out performances. A slightly raised platform at the rear of the hall offers an elevated perspective, providing some relief from the floor-level press. Acoustically, the hall presents the challenges inherent to a converted cinema space: hard, rectangular surfaces can generate a live, reflective sound. As such, the venue relies heavily on its installed public address system to achieve clarity and mitigate excessive reverberation, particularly in the lower frequencies. Auxiliary areas include a basement club and smaller side rooms, which host DJ sets or more intimate performances, each possessing distinct and often drier acoustic properties due to lower ceiling heights.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Upon arrival, entry to Club Puschkin is via the main doors on Görlitzer Straße. The initial ingress leads into a functional foyer area equipped with a primary bar, facilitating swift beverage service before or between sets. The experience within the main hall is typically one of close proximity to the performers, especially in the standing pit, which can become quite dense at peak capacity. For those seeking a slightly less immersive but still engaged experience, the rear raised platform offers a degree of personal space without sacrificing connection to the stage. The atmosphere is generally energetic and direct, reflecting the intimate scale of the venue.
