About Central Theatre: Layout, History & Architecture
Originally conceived as the New Victoria Picture Palace, this venue first opened its doors in 1928, an elegant example of Art Deco cinema design from the period. While its façade retains some of its original grandeur, the interior has undergone significant adaptation over the decades, transitioning from a film house to a multi-purpose live performance theatre. The hall features a traditional proscenium arch stage, with seating arranged across two primary levels: the stalls at ground level and a tiered circle above, providing a capacity of 952 patrons.
Sightlines are generally clear across both levels, though the tiered arrangement of the circle naturally provides a distinct perspective compared to the stalls. As a building not originally conceived for unamplified theatre, the acoustics within the auditorium are largely functional, benefiting significantly from modern sound reinforcement systems for musical acts and larger productions. For spoken word or more intimate acoustic performances, the space offers a relatively dry sonic environment, allowing for clarity but requiring careful sound engineering to achieve optimal resonance.
