About Cecil Sharp House: Layout, History & Architecture
Constructed between 1929 and 1930, Cecil Sharp House embodies an Arts and Crafts architectural style, subtly informed by Neo-Georgian sensibilities. Designed by H.M. Fletcher, the building was conceived as a dedicated hub for traditional music and dance. The primary performance space, Trefusis Hall, features a flat floor that can be configured for seated concerts, often with raked rows for optimal viewing, or cleared for social dancing. A modest stage provides the focal point, while a rear gallery offers an alternative, elevated perspective for audiences.
The capacity of the Main Hall varies with its configuration, accommodating approximately 400 seated patrons or up to 500 standing for less formal events. Sightlines from the main floor are generally clear, and the gallery, though compact, provides an unobstructed view of the stage below. Acoustically, the hall is noteworthy for its natural warmth and resonance, a quality carefully designed to enhance unamplified or lightly amplified folk music and spoken word. The timber-lined interior helps to diffuse sound effectively, creating an intimate sonic profile without the excessive reverberation often found in larger, more modern constructions. Beyond the main space, the building incorporates several smaller rooms used for workshops, rehearsals, and educational activities.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Ingress to Cecil Sharp House is managed via the main entrance on Regents Park Road, leading into a modest foyer area where a bar typically operates, offering refreshments prior to and during intervals. Depending on the event, audiences either find their pre-assigned seating or move into the standing pit area on the flat floor. The atmosphere generally reflects the appreciative and often participatory nature of traditional folk and dance events, fostering a sense of community rather than a high-intensity club environment. The presence of the gallery allows for varied audience experiences, from direct proximity to the performers on the main floor to a broader overview from above. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
