Bristol Beacon, originally established in 1867 as Colston Hall, stands as a prominent city centre venue, having undergone several transformations, most recently a substantial £132 million renovation completed in 2023. The architecture presents a fusion of its preserved Victorian facade, which hints at its civic origins, and the modern, acoustically engineered interiors conceived by Levitt Bernstein Architects. The venue comprises three primary performance spaces. The largest, Beacon Hall, features a grand main auditorium with a capacity of approximately 2,000 for standing events or 1,850 when fully seated. Its configuration includes a versatile ground-floor stalls area, two main tiered balconies (Circle and Upper Circle), and side boxes, offering diverse perspectives of the large proscenium arch stage.
The renovation significantly focused on acoustic optimisation, creating a versatile environment suitable for a broad spectrum of genres, from classical orchestras to amplified contemporary music. While the hall is designed for balanced sound delivery, its inherent size means amplified performances rely on sophisticated PA systems to achieve clarity and impact throughout. The Lantern Hall, a more intimate and flexible space, accommodates 300-450 attendees on a flat floor, suited for smaller gigs and community events, where proximity to the stage is immediate. Below street level, The Cellars provides a raw, low-ceilinged basement club atmosphere for up to 200 patrons, characterised by direct stage contact and the inherent warmth of a densely packed space.
