About Brangwyn Hall: Layout, History & Architecture
Brangwyn Hall, an integral part of Swansea’s civic Guildhall complex, was constructed between 1930 and 1934. The architectural style blends Neo-classical grandeur with understated Art Deco detailing, a hallmark of its design by Sir Percy Thomas. The space functions primarily as a substantial concert and events auditorium, capable of accommodating approximately 1,700 guests for fully seated performances, with adaptable configurations allowing for up to 2,000 for events utilising a standing floor.
The layout features a grand rectangular hall with a prominent proscenium stage at one end. The main floor is adaptable, either configured with temporary seating or cleared for standing audiences, while a permanent, gently raked balcony provides elevated sightlines. While views from the stalls are generally direct, some extreme side positions on the balcony may offer slightly angled perspectives of the stage. Acoustically, the hall was purpose-built for its civic and musical functions, possessing strong natural acoustics particularly suited for unamplified performances, aided by its high ceiling and extensive wood panelling. For contemporary amplified music, the audio fidelity relies significantly on a well-designed and precisely tuned modern PA system to project sound clearly and evenly through the voluminous space.
