The structure housing Berghain, originally part of a heat and power plant, dates back to the early 1950s, embodying the utilitarian, robust aesthetic of post-war industrial architecture prevalent in East Berlin. Converted into a nightclub in 2004, the building's brutalist origins are not merely preserved but amplified, characterized by expansive concrete surfaces, towering ceilings, and an imposing scale. The main hall, Berghain, occupies a vast, high-ceilinged space, presenting a largely flat standing floor. Its industrial grandeur provides largely unobstructed sightlines across the expansive dance area, with sparse, functional elements defining the interior landscape.
Above, Panorama Bar offers a contrasting yet complementary environment with lower ceilings and a more contained atmosphere. While the architectural language maintains consistency with exposed concrete and structural steel, this upper space feels comparatively intimate, featuring some pillar obstructions but generally good visibility.
