About Backstage Munich: Layout, History & Architecture

Backstage Munich, established at its current Reitknechtstraße location in 2004 within the former Optimolwerke industrial complex, embodies a functional, repurposed architectural style. The buildings, once part of a larger manufacturing site, now house a multi-room music venue. The overall design prioritises utility, with exposed concrete, steel structural elements, and high ceilings characteristic of industrial conversions. This raw aesthetic extends to the main performance spaces.

The venue operates across several distinct areas: the largest, "Halle", accommodates up to 1,500 standing patrons. Its large, unadorned industrial volume means its inherent acoustics lean towards lively reverberation, necessitating a high-quality, precisely tuned PA system for optimal sound delivery. For smaller acts, "Werk" offers capacity for approximately 600, while "Club" provides a more intimate environment for around 300, often featuring lower ceilings that can contribute to a dense, immediate sound profile. All primary performance spaces are configured for flat standing audiences, offering direct stage proximity rather than tiered seating, though specific areas may have elevated platforms for improved sightlines in dense crowds.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Ingress at Backstage Munich is typically straightforward, leading into a central courtyard area from which the various halls and the extensive biergarten are accessed. Multiple bars are positioned throughout the complex, facilitating beverage service across all event spaces. Inside the halls, the experience is characteristically energetic, with standing pits allowing for close proximity to the stage. Density in the Halle or Werk can become significant during sold-out performances, though the expansive nature of these industrial rooms generally prevents overly restrictive sightline issues from the main floor. The atmosphere generally reflects the diverse range of alternative, rock, metal, and electronic music presented.

With 10 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £68.12. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Lake Malice on 25th September 2026.
