About An Seomar: Layout, History & Architecture
An Seomar, situated on Huntly Street along the west bank of the River Ness, occupies a converted industrial structure dating from the late 19th century. Originally a warehouse, the building underwent significant refurbishment in 2005, re-emerging as a dedicated live music venue. The architectural style blends its robust Victorian red-brick shell with a contemporary, minimalist interior. The main auditorium is predominantly a flat standing floor, capable of accommodating approximately 700 patrons. A single, shallow mezzanine balcony is positioned towards the rear, offering limited elevated seating with clear sightlines over the main floor.
The hall's design priorities focused on maximizing floor space and stage visibility. Sightlines from the front two-thirds of the main floor are generally unobstructed. However, during sold-out events, crowd density at the very rear can occasionally impede a direct view of the stage. Acoustically, the high, somewhat irregular ceiling and exposed structural elements of the converted space contribute to a lively sound profile. While the venue is equipped with a robust house PA system, careful sound engineering is crucial to manage the room's natural resonance, particularly in the lower frequencies, ensuring clarity across the auditorium.

Entry to An Seomar is via a dedicated doorway directly off Huntly Street, leading into a modest foyer that houses the primary bar and cloakroom facilities. The main performance area opens beyond this, with a second, smaller bar located on the side of the standing pit. For popular events, the main floor can become quite dense, particularly close to the stage, offering an immersive, high-energy experience. Those preferring a less congested view will find the limited seats on the mezzanine balcony provide an elevated and direct perspective of the stage.
